Equal and opposite. Low and flat. Six.
A flat-six engine in front cross-section: finned cylinders laid out horizontally, with pistons on opposite sides of a single crankshaft and each connecting rod on its own offset crank pin. When one piston pushes out, its partner pushes the other way, so the forces cancel. That's primary balance, written on the shirt as ΣF = 0.
Laying the cylinders flat also keeps the engine's weight low in the car. For anyone who knows a boxer by its sound before they see it.
